It was also advised that company policies should guide facility design, using the example of considering parking policies early in the planning process.
  • Prioritizing Human Resources: Juan Ruiz highlighted the critical need to hire a human resources professional early in the process, citing the importance of cultural knowledge for effective implementation. The importance of establishing a strong human resources department early in the process was a key takeaway, with emphasis on aligning company policies with Costa Rican culture.
  • Leveraging Support Entities: The availability of support from entities like Procomer was highlighted as crucial for facilitating the establishment process, offering detailed guidance and assistance with government procedures (This advisory is free)

  • Talent Acquisition and Retention: Enrique Saborio stressed the importance of hiring the right talent for success. Strategies for effective hiring and retention were discussed, including the importance of balancing experienced hires with internal development and avoiding mass hiring from a single company. Carolina Sánchez emphasized the need to nurture talent to facilitate effective knowledge transfer within the organization. Cultivating a strong company culture was identified as a key retention tool, along with investing in employee development through scholarships and university partnerships. Communicating the company’s contribution to patient care was also emphasized as a way to boost employee engagement.
  • Investing in the Project Team: The need for adequate investment in the project team was underscored, acknowledging the scale and demanding nature of such a project and the importance of ensuring it’s not treated as a secondary task by the parent company’s team.
  • Costa Rica’s Appeal: The discussion highlighted several compelling reasons why Costa Rica is an advantageous location for medical device companies. Experts emphasized the access to a robust ecosystem of companies, resources, and expertise, as well as the unique opportunity to learn from others who have already navigated the establishment process. The significant concentration of medical device companies in the country was noted as a positive surprise for investors.
